Texas Pedestrian Accident

A 62-year-old man from Orion Township, Michigan, Raphael Flajole, was visiting Galveston Island as part of a family celebration, in which his brother was being ordained into the Catholic priesthood, when an unthinkable tragedy occurred. Flajole was walking along the seawall’s sidewalk when a pickup truck suddenly veered across several lanes of traffic and hit him.

According to police, witnesses reported that the 49-year-old driver of the pickup, Kevin Wade Wilson, had been driving erratically as he turned onto westbound 21st Street. They described him swerving across all lanes of traffic. Within seconds, the red pickup went over the seawall and hit two people. The other victim received only minor injuries.

Investigators from the Galveston Police Department are working hard to determine the reasons why Wilson was driving erratically and eventually drove off the seawall. While some people on the scene attended to the people Wilson hit with his truck, several others checked on Wilson. They were concerned because of the way the truck landed. A rock blocked the door from opening, leaving him trapped inside. Those witnesses described him to police as “real disoriented.”

Several hours after the accident, police charged Wilson with manslaughter and aggravated assault, but they left the door open for other charges, as well, since it’s not known whether or not he might have been under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Wilson was already on probation for a narcotics conviction at the time of the accident.

Unfortunately, any pedestrian can be the victim of an accident involving a car. In most cases, such accidents occur because of driver error. More often than not these days, the driver who causes such an accident may be texting, talking on the phone, eating, or otherwise distracted at the time. Other times, drivers may be under the influence of alcohol or drugs, whether illegal narcotics or prescription medications. Sometimes, drivers simply go too fast and lose control of the vehicle. It’s also possible the truck itself was defective.

Investigators will take a thorough look into all of the circumstances surrounding this accident and they will determine all of the possible causes for this horrible tragedy.
